Williams teamed with Corey Maggette, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, at Catholic League powerhouse Fenwick, which went to the Class AA semifinals in 1997-98. Currently a junior, Williams has emerged as one of the Cardinals’ leaders, averaging 15.6 points per game and shooting 40 percent from three-point range.
How does it feel to beat teams like Kansas and UCLA?
“We knew we had the talent to compete with those teams. I don’t think there are different levels of players from the bigger programs [to the mid-major schools]. I’ll never forget about Maui, beating the No. 3 and No. 4 teams back to back. Everybody counted us out.”
What are your career goals?
“I’d like to play basketball somewhere after college, even if it’s overseas. I’ve been playing since I was a little kid. I don’t want to give it up when I graduate. If I don’t make it [to the pros], I’m a marketing major, so I’ll go into my field.”
What do you miss about high school basketball?
“Our fans–it was wild at Fenwick. There were people everywhere we went [for games]. We had a great relationship with the people.”
