Virginia Beach, Boston and Honolulu are the best large U.S. cities for women, according to a survey featured in Ladies’ Home Journal in April.
Chicago scored a mediocre 36 out of the 57 large cities surveyed.
Rankings were based on crime rates, public schools, accredited child care, women in local government and other factors, such as divorce rates and climates.
The women’s magazine, with demographics firm Fast Forward, conducted the survey, the magazine’s fifth annual Best Cities for Women list.
For the first time, Ladies’ Home Journal also separately ranked cities with less than 300,000 people. In the small cities category, the top places were, beginning with the best, Madison, Wis.; Alexandria, Va.; and Ann Arbor, Mich.
Overall, 200 cities were ranked.
Rounding out the top 10 large cities were Austin, Texas; Arlington, Texas; Anaheim, Calif.; Minneapolis; Colorado Springs; San Diego; and Omaha.
Washington, D.C., came in 13th. New York was in 23rd place. San Francisco and Los Angeles came in 24th and 27th, respectively.
