EVANSTON–I like the new look of Tempo and I don’t miss “Fred Basset” at all.
However, I am appalled at the inclusion of the poorly drawn, tasteless, “Out of the Gene Pool.” It isn’t funny, poignant, or philosophical, and its characters are unattractive enough to be repulsive. It’s a real loser.
Please consider dumping two long-irrelevant comics: “Dick Tracy” and “Beetle Bailey.” With so much violence being reported in the news every day, do we have to include a comic that often involves the over-weight, over-bearing Sarge, beating up the hapless Beetle? It’s a waste of space.
The equally violent “crime-fighter” Dick Tracy also deserves the ax. There is enough crime in the news — why add it to the “funnies”? It’s not funny.
Please continue to carry the insightful, consistently humorous “Boondocks.” To those who find it racist, I say, sharpen your wit! And, the delightfully satirical “Dinette Set” deserves to be an every-day strip.
Lastly, bring back the eight-page Sunday comic format! I miss seeing larger type and pictures. The comics section is an enjoyable interlude in a newspaper crammed full of serious, sometimes scary, stuff.
Thank you for carrying all opinions of the Tempo section in your Letters column.
