Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

What’s up with the cocked hats and headbands on basketball players who have been pictured as recent winners? When UIC won the Horizon League tournament, the players were pictured with hats cocked to either side. Westinghouse’s state championship team was shown with several players sporting headbands draped over one ear. Indiana’s players celebrated with their Final Four hats set to one side. I have always known that wearing your hat or headband to one side was a sign that you were affiliated with a particular gang. Right side for one faction, left for another.

Regardless of whether the players are in a gang, I think this practice sends a terrible message to kids who worship these guys as heroes. Especially in the case of the high school team–why didn’t the coach tell them to put the hat or headband on straight or take it off all together?
