I am so glad to hear that the city is finally taking steps to halt the creation of housing and retail that doesn’t befit this great city known for its fantastic architecture and diverse neighborhoods (“Daley touts zoning code overhaul,” Metro, June 5).
In neighborhoods such as mine (West Town), new, sloppily constructed cinderblock eyesores loom over the few remaining humanly scaled houses and apartment buildings. As I enjoy one of the few back yards left on my street, I can’t help but ask why we have waited so long to say “no” to development that values square footage and cheap materials over architectural integrity and longevity.
