Michael D. Logan, 46, of Chicago, a personal trainer and Vietnam veteran, died Monday, June 17, in St. Francis Hospital in Evanston of complications from surgery for an aortic aneurysm. Mr. Logan grew up in a suburb of Birmingham, Ala. After graduating from high school, he married and entered the Air Force, where he worked as a medical technician during some of the last personnel pickups in Vietnam and in Guam refugee camps. He was divorced in his early 20s and dropped out of the University of Iowa because he couldn’t afford school and child support for his two sons, said his wife, Patricia, whom he married in 1989. For a time he was homeless, until a friend in Chicago helped him into a job as a filing clerk. He worked his way up to filing supervisor and mailroom supervisor. He developed an interest in personal training and became certified as a trainer and a medical exercise specialist. For the last 10 years he worked independently on the Northwest Side, claiming among his clients former Cubs player Ernie Banks. Knowing of his family’s poor medical history, Mr. Logan had long been health conscious, but when his brother suffered a stroke six years ago at 44, Mr. Logan began to do all he could to live a long life, his wife said. “He was the kind of guy who made everybody feel important all the time,” his wife said. Other survivors include four sons, Alex, Michael, Ian and Ryan; his mother, Annie Mae Chandler; and a brother, Dick. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, with services at 8 p.m., in Piser Chapel, 5206 N. Broadway, Chicago.
