A driver from Georgia who is charged with striking and killing a South Side man was in serious condition Sunday after an angry crowd beat him when he returned to the scene, Chicago police said.
Ernest Sanders, 38, of Norcross, Ga., was charged with reckless homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol, a police spokeswoman said.
Michael Walker, 25, of the 2200 block of East 87th Street was crossing 87th near Paxton Avenue about 11:50 p.m. Saturday when he was struck by a Jeep going east, police said.
Walker was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.
A crowd attacked Sanders when he returned to the scene shortly after the collision, Sgt. Nancy Higgins said. “He did the right thing by turning around and returning,” she said.
Sanders, who also was taken to Christ Medical Center, suffered head trauma, authorities said. Police said no one was arrested in his beating.
