Chris Stapleton’s reporting of prices for United, American and other leading airlines versus Southwest, ATA, etc. isn’t very accurate (Voice of the people, Aug. 22). Using bargain-fare vendors on the Internet, I have been very successful in getting excellent deals from O’Hare International Airport to southern California on United in particular (for example, $185 round-trip to San Diego direct, non-stop). This price beat out everyone else, including the bargain carriers.

That’s hardly a non-competitive stance, as he implies.

His criticism of a government cash solution for United also does not accurately describe that United has requested government loans for temporary relief. Loans imply that the borrower intends to repay the money.

While I am no champion for United, I agree with Mike Fitzsimmons, a United Airlines retiree, whose “United Airlines can survive this turbulence” piece appeared on the same page. He wrote, “United’s demise would be America’s loss as well.”
