Chicago police were searching Thursday for a would-be robber who shot a 26-year-old man as he and his fiance walked from a Lakeview restaurant late Wednesday night.
Aaron Witkowski of Buffalo Grove was in serious condition at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. The couple were walking east in the 1200 block of West Eddy Street from a restaurant when a vehicle pulled up nearby and double-parked about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, said Belmont Police Area Sgt. Gillian McLaughlin.
A man got out of the vehicle and came toward them, brandishing a gun. The man demanded the couple’s money, and as Witkowski was reaching for his wallet, the attacker shot him in the chest, police said.
The woman and other witnesses began screaming and apparently scared off the would-be robber, who fled without taking the wallet or money, police said.
