War is terrible enough, but it is even more so without the support of the people in whose name it is being waged.
Support for Bush’s ill-advised adventure in Iraq is slipping, and this is even before the body bags start showing up at Andover Air Force Base.
The president should do himself and the nation a favor by calling people and asking them how they really feel about this war. He should be absolutely frank with them about the human and financial cost they are going to be asked to shoulder, including the cost of years of occupation that must inevitably follow.
He may not hear what he wants to hear, but it will be far better to know the score while there is still time to avoid this tragic mistake. Finding out too late, as we did in Vietnam, would prove that we have learned nothing from history.
