Irene Pedersen, nee Burke, loving wife of the late Paul; beloved mother of Paula, Karen (Jamie Fiffles), Christine, and Eric (Laurie); kind grandmother of Nova and Chase, Sean, Adam, Eric, and Stephen; great-grandmother to Alexandra; special sister to Jeremiah Burke (Gladys); caring aunt to Joe and Michael; loyal friend to many. Irene valiantly battled a terminal illness with her usual will and determination that allowed her so many victories. She recently celebrated 50 years as a dedicated nurse during which she raised a beautiful family and devoted herself to the needs of so many others including the brain injured. In fact, Irene was the honored recipient of the prestigious James Brady Award for her work with the brain injured. Always active in community affairs, she was a multi-talented woman who was ahead of her time in many ways. Participating in prayer groups, civic events, Girl Scouts, garden clubs, professional business groups (BPW), and medical rehabilitation organizations, Irene was an example to others in her efforts toward the betterment of herself and the world around her. Her special spirit, gusto for life, infectious laugh, enthusiasm and vibrance will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, memoriums may be made to the Brain Injury Assoc. of Illinois, 1127 S. Mannheim Rd., #213, Westchester, IL 60154, which was founded by Irene Burke Pedersen.
