As a retired Chicago police officer, I always felt some consolation while working the streets that there was a death penalty in Illinois. I believe it is a deterrent and no one can prove it is not.

Gov. George Ryan commuted the death sentences of the killers of some of my best friends and men of exceptional value both to their families and the community, on behalf of lifetime criminals and people of little or no value to anyone. I can only hope that Ryan is promptly indicted, convicted and made to suffer some measure of the sorrow he has caused to victims’ families. It would truly be a gross miscarriage of justice if this last-minute grandstand play would in any way deter his possible indictment.
