Ozzie Smith, the former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop became the latest Hall of Famer to weigh in on the Pete Rose issue, saying that he believed contrition would a good first step for the career hits leader.
“Personally, I think Pete has to step up and take a lot of responsibility before he’s going to be allowed to get into the Hall of Fame,” Smith said.
– Artur Grigorian defended his WBO lightweight title in Essen, Germany, by defeating Matt Zegan of Poland. Grigorian, a 35-year-old Armenian fighting out of Germany, defended his title for the 17th time. Two officials scored the fight 115-113 and 115-112 in Grigorian’s favor, while one had it even at 114-114.
– Travis Cabral laid down a nearly flawless final run in Lake Placid, N.Y., winning his second World Cup moguls event of the season and edging Olympic champion Janne Lahtela by nearly a full point. Cabral had 26.79 points to 25.80 for Lahtela.
