Seven people, including three Americans, who were back-country skiing died Monday when they were swept away by an avalanche in an area known for hazardous skiing conditions.
The victims included two Californians and a Coloradan, police said. The four others were Canadians.
They were among 20 tourists and guides skiing near the desolate Durrand Glacier in avalanche-prone British Columbia when a wall of snow crashed down the mountain. Thirteen skiers escaped, but at least two people were hospitalized, said Ian McKichan, the regional coroner.
The risk of a snowslide in the area was rated “considerable” at the time.
