The death of a 5-month-old South Side girl has been ruled a homicide, authorities said Sunday.

The infant’s parents called police Saturday evening when she became unresponsive during breastfeeding, police said.

The baby was rushed to Holy Cross Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m., said a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner.

Authorities initially thought her death may have been caused by Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, police said. But an autopsy Sunday determined the death was a homicide due to head trauma, the spokesman said.

The Department of Children and Family Services is investigating, said Jill Manuel, a department spokeswoman.
