Number of Oregonians who took their own lives under a controversial physician-assisted suicide law last year, according to a report from Oregon health officials. It was the highest number since physician-assisted suicide became legal in 1998. The number was up more than 80 percent from 21 in 2001, as more terminally ill patients sought a reprieve from suffering they might face in their final days, despite opposition from critics, including U.S. Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft.
