Anthony Thomas slogged through a subpar second season, and no doubt will be motivated by General Manager Jerry Angelo’s off-season comments that he wasn’t a “special” back. Here’s a look at the “special” backs available in the draft:
1. Willis McGahee
6-0, 220, Miami
Terrible year for running backs, so even though rehabbing serious
knee injury, McGahee is best long-term value.
2. Larry Johnson
6-1, 220, Penn State
Productive inside runner but not explosive. Penn State notorious for running back busts.
3. Chris Brown
6-2, 215, Colorado
Followed Gary Barnett from Northwestern. A Naperville North alum. A workhorse.
4. Onterrio Smith
5-9, 220, Oregon
Transfer from Tennessee is quick, shifty bowling-ball style back and can return kicks. Left Vols under shady circumstances.
5. Musa Smith
6-0, 230, Georgia
A power runner from school that produces quality backs including Terrell Davis, Robert Edwards and Garrison Hearst.
