Prompting occasional double takes from passersby, a maintenance building at Northwestern University’s Ryan Field has become the unlikely home for an Evanston fire station.
With a new building under construction for Fire Station No. 3, officials worked out an arrangement with the university to lease space until the project is completed.
The temporary station has a double-wide trailer on the adjacent parking lot that can house up to three firefighters.
“They are currently living there and working out of the station . . . ,” said Alan Berkowsky, division chief for the Fire Department. “It’s kind of a unique setup between the city and the university.”
Berkowsky said the new station is expected to open in December.
