– In a review in the June 8 Books section of “Invented Eden: The Elusive, Disputed History of the Tasaday,” author Robin Hemley was quoted as suggesting that President Ferdinand Marcos used the Tasaday tribe “to put a good face on the Philippines in the wake of martial law.” While the Tasaday were first identified before martial law was imposed, many people thought Marcos subsequently used his policy toward them to manipulate public opinion by presenting himself as concerned about their well-being. It is this period of the Philippine government’s relationship with the Tasady to which Hemley was referring.
