At the turn of the last century, Philander Barclay often was seen riding his bicycle around Oak Park and River Forest, documenting buildings and village life in photographs. His bicycle appears in some of the photos. Barclay, known as the local historian, died in 1940. Two Oak Park restaurants, Philander’s and Poor Phil’s, honor his name.
