The chief executives of Northwest Airlines and Continental Airlines doubt there will be demand among U.S. passenger airlines for the new 550-seat Airbus A380 jumbo jet. Airbus says it “never expected a U.S. passenger carrier to be in what we call the first wave of orders,” spokeswoman Mary Anne Greczyn says, adding most U.S. airlines don’t fly the long routes that require such large passenger capacity. Airbus has 11 customers, including passenger and cargo firms, for the A380. It is expected to begin airline service in 2006.
