Aldermen this week approved a proposal for Northern Illinois Gas Co. to construct and operate a gas distribution system in the city under a 30-year franchise agreement backdated to 1991.
Under the plan, the city can still seek better pricing from other providers, but Nicor controls the distribution of gas. Geneva maintains condemnation rights and can choose to provide gas to its customers itself.
Craig Whyte of Nicor said all residents can buy gas from other suppliers if they wish. The franchise agreement gives Nicor permission to maintain and operate its infrastructure in Geneva, he said.
