After Simeon grabbed a quick 6-0 lead in the opening minutes of its Public Illini Prairie State contest against Hubbard, a few Greyhounds fans mumbled that their team’s 25-game conference winning streak could be in jeopardy.
Hubbard (7-0, 4-0) put the worries to rest, scoring 20 unanswered points, and the defense made it stand for a 20-12 victory Friday night at Gately Stadium.
Simeon (4-3, 2-2) trailed 20-12 at the half and decided to air it out to start the second.
But Hubbard didn’t look a bit bothered by Simeon’s early score after the Greyhounds scored three consecutive touchdowns to take a 20-6 lead in the second quarter.
“We made too many mental mistakes in the first half,” said Hubbard’s Chris Patterson, who had three sacks on the night. “We let Simeon get down in the red zone a little too much. But we told ourselves no more points and we stopped them from there. Our defense is just going to stop whomever comes our way.”
Demetrius Williams (48 yards on nine carries) put Hubbard on the board and knotted the game when the back scampered 36 yards on a counter play with 6 minutes 26 seconds left in the first quarter.
Hubbard took a 13-6 lead when Robert Hughes capped an 11-play, 46-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run with 6:54 to play in the half.
