And much of it goes toward paying the people who oversee everything from parks to police. Mayor Daley recently released his 2004 budget recommendations, a thick book packed with numbers that shows how the city might try to overcome preliminary projections of a $116 million deficit.
The city employs about 37,700 people, and after some recently announced reductions take effect next year, that total should be about 36,300, said Lisa Schrader, budget department spokeswoman.
The mayor, clerk, treasurer and members of the City Council will be getting a raise over the next four years. Most department heads will not see an increase, unless their positions were involved in contracts that were recently negotiated, such as the head of the fire department, officials said.
Here are the people who run Chicago, their departments, and what Mayor Daley thinks each should be paid for 2004.
