Edie Brickell

Volcano (Cherry/Universal)

A Texas girl singing sultry tunes in a down-home drawl over ethereal jazz melodies — must be Norah Jones, right? Not this time. It’s Edie Brickell, fresh from nearly a decade of raising children and quietly plotting her next move after 1994’s poorly received “Picture Perfect Morning.” With help from producer/guitarist Charlie Sexton and studio pros such as drummer Steve Gadd and bassist Pino Palladino (but none from her husband, Paul Simon), Brickell turns in her most rewarding and self-assured set ever. The lead track, “Rush Around,” decries our inability to slow down and enjoy life. “Volcano” suggests that a leisurely pace — both in terms of tempo and work schedule — suits her just fine.
