With Halloween approaching, this memory comes to mind: When I was young, growing up on Chicago’s North Side, a neighbor boy and girl came to our door one night to trick or treat. My mother answered the door and said something complimentary about their costumes before asking them if they knew that Halloween was nearly two months away. It was still early September.

“Yes,” they replied. “But we’re moving away before then.”
