A gunman tied up two jewelry store employees Monday night in Westfield Shoppingtown Hawthorn in Vernon Hills and stole more than $100,000 in jewelry and cash, police said Tuesday.

The man robbed Kay Jewelers on the upper level about 10:15 p.m. after the mall at Illinois Highway 60 and Milwaukee Avenue had closed, said Vernon Hills Police Officer Kim Christenson.

The gunman ordered two employees into a restroom, where he told one of them to tie up the other and fill two bags with jewelry. The man tied up the second employee and left the mall, Christenson said. One of the employees freed herself and called police.

The man was described as black, 25 to 35 years old, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 245 pounds, with a muscular build and light facial stubble. The man wore white gym shoes, a black knit hat and a purple jumpsuit with “DADA” in white lettering on the front and back, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Vernon Hills police at 847-362-4449.
