That brick fireplace of yours probably could use a good cleaning before your holiday fire roars. Brick can be cleaned with a solution of 1/2 to 1 cup of trisodium phosphate (TSP) in a gallon of hot water. Scrub with a stiff brush and rinse with warm water. Or try a commercial brick cleaner, available at home centers.
