The Chicago City Council’s Education Committee will meet next month in an attempt to identify reasons for the alarming dropout rate among Hispanic students and to produce recommendations to reverse it, Latino public officials and community leaders announced Tuesday.
Data from the 2000 Census showed that one-third of Hispanics in the 16-to-24 age group in Chicago had dropped out of school, compared with one of five African-Americans and one of 17 whites, officials said.
