Grayslake senior Kayla Ming scored Saturday from everywhere and in almost every way possible.
She had a game-high 27 points, including three first-half three-pointers, as the Rams (12-3) outscored rolled to a 62-49 victory over host Warren in the championship game of the Blue Devil Classic.
“They definitely had a size advantage, but we had a quickness advantage … and we took advantage of that,” said Ming, who converted six free throws and six field goals. “We’re a team that can run up and down the floor, and we showed that [Saturday].
“I got some incredible passes, right to my hands. Some from fast breaks, some from cuts. All I had to do was catch, turn and shoot.”
In the second quarter the Rams ran wild, going from a 13-10 edge after the first period for a 36-20 halftime advantage.
Ming scored with 47 seconds remaining in the first half, giving Grayslake its biggest lead of the game at 36-19.
“The thing that cost us the game was defensive transition. That’s what we have to work on,” Warren coach John Stanczykiewicz said. “They made us pay for not covering in the transition.”
Warren (10-8) was led by junior guard TK LaFleur, who scored 13 of her 20 points in the second half. Junior forward Alexandra Leach added 10.
In the consolation game, Lake Forest (9-8) defeated Waukegan 49-44 behind 12 points from junior Megan Christensen and 10 from junior Leah Hoagland.
The Bulldogs (2-14) were led by seniors Jeilisa Luna (14 points) and Marissa Redmond (11).
Also Saturday in Warren, Carmel crushed Deerfield 60-32 behind 16 points from Caitlin Krombach and 11 from Jenny Eckhart.
Katherine Morrison led the Warriors with eight points.
