Despite unanimously conveying their disgust over how lecherous Pete Rose has been for lying to the public and to baseball all these years, it seems that character and integrity, in the end, don’t count to Tribune sportswriters.

Dan McGrath will hold his nose as he votes yes. Fred Mitchell will vote for Rose, but won’t write “hallowed Hall of Fame.” Bill Adee votes yes because it’s only what happens on the field that counts at Cooperstown. Philip Hersh will require Rose’s plaque make mention of the ban. And Paul Sullivan believes there is nothing more un-American than welching on a sports bet.

Is it no wonder morality continues to erode in this country? A no vote would have much more impact than a yes.
