This is regarding the Jan. 14 editorial “When secrets are old news.” Regardless of your criticism of former Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill’s revelation of President Bush’s early intention to oust Saddam Hussein, the fact remains that Bush’s decision to invade Iraq, which he falsely described as an imminent threat to America’s security, was a gross deception, a lie.
Bush cunningly used Sept. 11 and the alleged tie between Iraq and Al Qaeda as the pretext for taking on the easier target.
Face it: The real threat to our security still comes from the only ones who attacked and destroyed the World Trade Center. Iraq could easily have been contained and Hussein could have been managed. Meanwhile the tens of thousands of troops and billions of dollars should have been used to find Osama bin Laden. Then our attention could have been turned to Hussein.
Two plus years after the towers fell, however, the advisory threat level continues to quiver at yellow and orange. Had Bush exercised the right priority, the threat level might now even be blue (guarded) or green (low).
