I do not understand the purpose of your editorial regarding Carol Moseley Braun’s now-terminated campaign for the Democratic Party presidential nomination (“Back to reality,” Jan. 16).
You strongly criticize her mere existence as a candidate, yet do not even mention any of her positions on any of the campaign issues.
Nor does your editorial give any indication of acknowledging the significance of an African-American woman competing in any stage of one of the two major parties’ presidential race.
While your editorial states, “We shouldn’t think too harshly about her failed effort,” you compare her effort to a person hitting herself in the head with a hammer. You culminate this ridiculous analogy by stating, “Thank goodness she put that hammer down before the whole adventure got too messy.”
I believe that her campaign is another step, albeit a small one, in opening up the opportunities for women and minorities to become president of the United States. I must have missed the point of your editorial; is there more to your piece than personally attacking Moseley Braun for attempting to be a candidate for our nation’s highest office?
