If President Bush really wanted to defend marriage, he would suggest legislation aimed at lowering the rising divorce rate. Improving the economic climate and the employment rate would go a long way in removing primary causes of breakups, but they apparently are not attractive causes of his right-wing allies.

Attacking people who wish to form committed relationships does not either defend or support marriage. Playing with the Constitution for political gain is, moreover, the ultimate sin.
