90 Day Men
Panda Park
Once just another post-rock band on a crowded Chicago playing field, the 90 Day Men have made some impressive improvements over the years. Now tricky drum parts, Beefheart-meets-Jeff Buckley vocals and spooky piano patterns dominate, and while the songs on “Panda Park” are often as pretentious as they are intriguing, there’s no question the band is carving out a unique niche for itself–sort of like an indie-rock Radiohead if that band was half as weird as people claim. An off-kilter sense makes the disc pleasantly perplexing, like the group’s intentionally stumbling from chaos to cohesion in a quest to keep things fresh.
Take away: Strange racket
