Mary Lou Lord

Baby Blue

Mary Lou Lord has never really made music as good as her backstory: tales of life busking around Boston and living in fear as Courtney Love’s erstwhile arch nemesis. Fortunately, Lord finally found a good foil in Bevis Frond mastermind Nick Saloman, who had a hand in writing nearly every song on this disc. Lord’s not much of a singer, sounding like a thinner Amy Rigby, but she still delivers Saloman’s (mostly) folk-rock songs like they’re her own. Yet Lord sounds most convincing when she’s actually singing her own material, whether it’s “Long Way from Tupelo” or the token growin’ older number “43.”
