You might shop for shoes at 4 p.m., when your feet are at their fullest. You might wear the same kind of socks you will wear with the shoes you buy. You might even steer clear of non-breathable materials, such as vinyl. But you don’t know nothin’ about shoes, honey, until you’ve shopped with a podiatrist.

Earlier this month, Dr. Joel Feder of Affiliated Podiatrists in Chicago and two WN emissaries went shopping for shoes at a major downtown department store. Unlike most males, Feder exhibited no fear as we wandered through the displays of shoes, some aggressively feminine and quirky, some tame and sensible. Rather, he showed a keen knowledge of feet, shoes and what makes them work well together.

Feder helped us choose a variety of work, play and dress styles, and then critiqued them as we tried them on. Here is an accounting of the trial and the lesson learned from each fitting.
