John Kerry tells us that abortion should be safe, legal and rare (“Moderates work to put centrist stamp on Kerry,” News, May 9). Well tooth extraction and appendectomy, among many other medical procedures, are safe and legal. Is there any defining reason they should be rare?

Apparently Kerry is reluctantly conceding that abortion is a nasty procedure. If not, who cares whether it is rare or commonplace?

Further, he and many other Catholic politicians take the weasel-like position of: I am personally opposed to abortion, but I am in favor of a woman’s legal choice in the matter.

Let’s flash back to 1860: I personally object to slavery, but because it is legal in some states, it is fine by me.

I find such mealy-mouthed statements disgusting. Take a stand on abortion, one way or the other, and show some backbone, which is sadly lacking in Kerry.
