I have long admired the work of former Tribune senior correspondent R.C. Longworth. And in his May 16 Perspective piece, he rightfully concludes that America’s future role in the world will depend on how the U.S. exits from Iraq. But he ends the article with the non sequitur that has plagued U.S. foreign policy since Sept. 11, 2001: “If the legacy of Iraq is an American retreat from leadership, then the terrorists indeed will have won, and on a global scale.”

In spite of what President Bush and his cabal of ideologues say, the war with Iraq is not and has never been about the war on terrorism.
