The Chicago White Sox bullpen was gassed, and manager Ozzie Guillen was hoping starter Jon Garland could go deep into Sunday’s game against the Expos.
Garland was perfect for 5 1 1/43 innings, but he wound up allowing a two-run homer to Orlando Cabrera with one out in the bottom of the ninth to let Montreal escape with a 4-2 victory at Olympic Stadium.
Garland (5-4) was charged with four runs on three hits. He struck out a season-high seven and walked three in 8 1 1/43 innings. The Sox return home to face Cleveland on Monday night after going 2-4 on a trip to Florida and Montreal.
“It was kind of an ugly road trip,” Guillen said. “There were a lot of ups and downs. One day you score a lot of runs (the Sox scored 14 Saturday night and lost), and the next day when you need run support. … That’s the best I’ve seen Garland throw all year. He didn’t deserve the result. We had opportunities a couple of times to score.”
