Two masked men armed with handguns assaulted three bank employees with pepper spray Thursday morning during a robbery in Elgin, authorities said.
One male and one female employee of Amcore Bank, 170 N. McLean Blvd., were treated at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin after being sprayed, Elgin Police Sgt. Bill Wolf said. Both were released later Thursday, he said. Paramedics treated a third employee at the scene.
The robbers walked into the bank about 10:30 a.m. and ordered several customers and employees to the floor, FBI Special Agent Ross Rice said.
The robbers emptied cash drawers and took more cash from a small vault, authorities said. The amount of cash stolen was not released.
Investigators had several leads but declined to elaborate. They were examining video-surveillance tapes, Wolf said.
