Your editorial on the affordable housing bill ignores a number of key points. According to the Illinois Municipal League there are 1,298 municipalities. The list published by the Illinois Housing Development Authority now only shows 49 non-exempt municipalities. It was originally speculated that there might be 80 to 100 municipalities not in compliance. These numbers speak for themselves. There is no crisis requiring state legislation–1,249 municipalities offer the required amount of affordable housing, including the massive City of Chicago. For those that do not, there is plenty of housing in neighboring communities.
Furthermore the big growth areas are in Will County and that is where new jobs and industry are locating; that is where you can find plenty of affordable housing.
This is a bill that destroys local autonomy in land use for the sake of a liberal social engineering experiment. It is a power grab by a state government dominated by the City of Chicago. Contrary to the Tribune, there is no regional problem. Oak Brook and Naperville are not a region. This is a dangerous bill, built on false premises, and should be repealed.
