This is regarding “Reasons to celebrate paying taxes” (Voice of the people, Aug. 15), by Hallie Metzger. While I agree with Metzger that the city of Chicago has an abundance of fantastic, tax-supported recreation opportunities, I was dumbfounded by her assertion that “our present tax structure is regressive . . . we should fix that.”

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the top 20 percent of taxpayers already pay 82.5 percent of individual tax liabilities, while the bottom 60 percent of taxpayers pay just 3.2 percent.

How could a tax structure that is already so progressive possibly be described as regressive? I’m afraid to ask how she would “fix” it.
