In response to various reports about attendance at the Olympics in Athens, I would like to share my reasoning about why I don’t watch the Olympics:

– Because nationalities used to mean something, and coaches and competitors should not be able to change countries as often as they change their shoes.

– Because if the scale is 1 to 10, then not every competitor deserves somewhere between a 9.001 and a 9.999.

– Because Olympian gymnasts and ice skaters are allowed to compete no matter how young and no matter how malnourished.

– Because Olympian teams are now composed of professionals who sell their faces and bodies to all forms of advertising.

– Because the Olympics used to be about sports, not about the trials and tribulations that the athletes had to suffer in order to become world-class commodities.
