I’ve really appreciated the recent coverage and editorial (“Semantics won’t help Darfur,” Aug. 16) on the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. We need constant reminders of the desperate situation there, since similar suffering will be replicated over most of sub-Saharan Africa in coming years due to the effects of poverty, disease and HIV/AIDS if developed nations fail to act.

In 2002, President Bush pledged that the U.S. would lead by example when he proposed the Millennium Challenge Account. This program provides core development assistance to the poorest nations, which are held accountable to govern justly, invest in people and promote economic freedom.

The House has only approved half of its $2.5 billion funding requested for next fiscal year; the Senate will consider its funding when Congress reconvenes soon.

Please help us keep our promise to those in great need.
