Bless you, Rob Johnson, for your beautiful letter (“Realize effect of labels on people with disabilities” (Voice of the people, Aug. 13). We have to assume that most people cannot possibly want to be so unkind and thoughtless in using the terms “retard” and “retarded.” Perhaps they cannot envision what it is like to have a special-needs member in their own family. In our own case, one of the worst incidents was when a child referred to the autistic member of our family as “monkey brain.” What was especially painful was that the mother of the child who spoke these words said nothing to correct this cruel comment.
