Before hundreds of artists showcased their work last week in Highland Park, dozens of adults and teenagers got a chance to create their own works of art.
As part of the 20th annual Port Clinton Art Festival, a handful of the 260 featured artists held free workshops for those who wanted to try their hand at sculpting, painting and making decorative mosaic stepping stones.
Necia Apfel of Highland Park attended a workshop taught by Glenview artist John Karl, who demonstrated a technique that Apfel followed to scratch white lines into a black board. The result was a picture of a lion, she said. “I don’t create anything great, but it’s just interesting to get into some other field,” said Apfel, a retired astronomer.
“It’s one thing to look at art, but it’s another to actually go through the process and try your hand at it,” said Amy Amdur, event director and founder.
The festival continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Port Clinton Square, on Central Avenue between 1st and 2nd Streets.
