Today America celebrates Labor Day alone.
The rest of the developed world celebrates Labor Day on other days, typically May 1.
America’s isolation highlights our ignorance of the fact that workers in most other developed countries have greater rights and benefits.
In other modern countries, guaranteed health-insurance coverage is standard. The ability to afford medical care does not depend on having a job with an employer able or willing to provide coverage. American workers have the fewest paid vacation days.
In other countries workers have greater protection against losing the jobs and better unemployment benefits. Workers are often represented on corporate boards.
The disparity in incomes between labor and management is far greater in the U.S. than other countries.
To top it all, our life expectancy is lower than in Western Europe and Japan.
Happy Labor Day.
