A Boynton Beach man used Hurricane Frances to lure his 83-year-old mother to her death in what was believed to be a murder-suicide, Florida officials said.

John Robert Johnson, 54, evidently invited his mother, Veola, to his house to ride out the storm, police said. When she got there, he started a car in the garage, and both died later of carbon monoxide poisoning, police said.

A suicide letter was found inside Johnson’s home, Detective Ray Schilke said. Its content were not released, but he said, “We do believe that the mom was not a willing participant.”

Mrs. Johnson and her son lived next door to each other at the Chanteclair Villas condominium complex. “Investigators are looking at it like a safe haven offered,” Schilke said.
