Dr. John D. Root, 63, of Chicago, IL, passed away on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004 at 6:30 p.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Queen of All Saints Church, 606 S. Woodland Ave, in Michigan City. Burial will follow services in Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City. Viewing will be on Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Root Funeral Home, 312 E 7th St., Michigan City and from 10 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Queen of All Saints Church. Survivors include one brother William H. (Carol L.) Root of Michigan City; two nieces, two nephews; nine great-nieces and nephews. Dr. Root was a 1962 graduate of Notre Dame University and earned his Masters and Doctorates from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. He was a retired History Professor and Head of the Humanities Division at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Dr. Root was a veteran of Viet Nam attaining the rank of Capt and receiving two bronze stars. Dr. Root published many articles on Viet Nam and was writing a book at the time of his death. Dr. Root also played for the Chicago Lions Rugby Team for many years. Memorials maybe be made to the MS Research in care of the Root Funeral Home.
